What do we do

Xtra Mile Events is a professional sports events management company, which organises a range of high quality triathlons, duathlons, runs, swims, and cycle events.  By the end of 2014 we expect approximately 50,000 people to have taken part in our events since we started in 2007.  

We organise endurance events for the public across Wales, the North West and Yorkshire.  We also have a range of race services including hire of events equipment and electronic race timing.  Additionally, we organise bespoke corporate sports events for companies, groups and charities.  So if you are looking for something slightly different as a morale boosting exercise, a way to bring like-minded people together, a profile raiser, or just a bit of fun, we would love to discuss your needs and put a package together for you.

At Xtra Mile Events we see all sorts of fantastic people crossing our finish lines, from those who have not done anything sporty since their last PE lesson, to professionals in the sport.  No matter what their level of fitness, most competitors have something in common because they are the type of people who meet a challenge by putting their all into it, and then giving it that bit more – that extra 10%.   From the time they set their goals and select an event, during their training, and finally in the effort they put into their performance on the day to get themselves all the way over the finish line, they are personally going their ‘Xtra Mile’.

Xtra Mile Events is essentially a family business, headed up by wife and husband, Gemma Herbertson and Simon Hill, and supported by a top team of experienced staff located in our office in South Manchester. The staff, plus a large base of fantastic marshals on race days, are all responsible for helping the company to put on some great events, and for putting in that little ‘umph’ which keeps people coming back to our events and recommending them to their friends and colleagues.  

Gemma Herbertson

MD and founder of Xtra Mile Events, Gemma has a Masters in Leisure and Tourism Management from the University of Gloucestershire.  A triathlon enthusiast herself and Level 1 Triathlon Coach, and her industry experience includes work in leisure centres, university sports administration, sports development, project management, and as a Senior Consultant with top sport & leisure consultancy Knight, Kavanagh & Page.  In 2007, Gemma was the Further Education Representative with UCS (University and College Sport), and was instrumental in the creation of Further Education Sports Co-ordinators.  

Gemma is very motivated and is passionate about delivering high quality sports events, where the customer is at the heart of things.  She also loves ‘joined up thinking’ and helping clubs, charities and individuals in any way she can through Xtra Mile Events. 

Simon Hill

MD of Xtra Mile Events, Simon joined the team full time in 2009 after a 15 year career in the international wine business; including 4 years as European Manager for the Australian company Wingara Wine Group.  His background includes strategic business development, finance, entertainment and events management.  With a passion for sport and a BSc Hons degree in catering systems, Simon is keen on logistical working and streamlining processes.

Simon is results-driven and (just like the A-Team) he loves it when a plan comes together!
